ADHD, attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder, affects millions of children in the US, and it seems to be approaching epidemic proportions. Children’s behavior on average varies greatly from the behavior of those with ADHD behavior. It is often unnecessary for a parent to be concerned that their child has ADHD, even if they have a short attention span. For preschoolers though, this is common behavior. The same can be said for older children and even adults, an ADHD diagnosis is made based on a persons level of interest in something and what holds their attention, not on a short attention span. This article discusses three common ADHD symptoms in children.
There are quite a few forms of behavior you should focus on if you suspect your child may have ADHD. Also, know that each behavior has specific qualities that you should look for. If a child is truly ADHD their lack of focus will pervade all areas of their life and be highly consistent. Does your child seem to ‘bounce’ from one thing to the next and then the next? This can appear to border on compulsion or look like hyperactivity. This behavior will remain consistent in your child for a period of six months or more. Behavior over this long of a time frame should be discussed with your physician. If your child struggles with organization it could be ADHD. What we are discussing here is the context in which your young child approaches tasks from an organizational standpoint. While this may seem a bit hard to fathom a young child being organized each age group will have it’s own set of organizational abilities. Kids will often display their organizational preferences at an early age. One of the key elements in recognizing the signs of ADHD is noting how long these behaviors last.
An accurate diagnosis of ADHD of child takes observation of multiple symptoms. A professional will know what symptoms and the time frame need for each to make a proper diagnosis. Another common symptom is a child who is the source for problems within relationships. Children or adults can be affected by this. It is vital that this behavior is observed over a long time frame like six months.
An evaluation by your family physician is necessary if you feel your child has had these symptoms for a long period of time.
